European Social Fund Outstanding Individual Learner Award

Timothy Curbbun

2016 Runner-up

After trying university, Tim decided primary school teaching wasn’t for him and opted for a career in the beauty therapy industry.

Whilst working and progressing in retail, Tim continued to study at a local Make Up Academy and Chesterfield College. There, while undertaking an apprenticeship at a local salon he helped establish, they spotted his potential to give something back to learners and obtained ESF funding to enable him to undertake an assessor award.

Taking to the assessor role with enthusiasm, Tim built on his customer service and management experience, providing employers with in-college continual professional development training and shortlisting learners for jobs prior to salon interview. The college, who describe Tim as “what every FE college needs,” say salon owners have remarked on the high standard of learners he has put forward.

Tim says he has a passion for supporting people, “The beauty therapy industry has always been my interest and passion, but I wanted to take it further and make a difference to people’s lives. Now I have given students career-changing experiences.

As a male in the beauty industry, there have been many challenges, however the support and guidance of friends, family members, employers and the staff at Chesterfield College means I’m now hoping to progress into a teaching role.”
