Michael was unemployed and experienced periods of depression and low self-esteem; he described himself as “lost”. However, one particular visit to the local job centre set him on a new path that completely changed his life.
He was referred by his job coach to the Learning Curve. With his confidence at an all-time low, he was initially uninterested, but with some encouragement from staff at the Learning Curve, Michael signed up to The Prince’s Trust Team programme.
From the very start, Michael was engaged and eager to learn. He took on board advice on coping strategies, explored how to re-build his self-esteem and began to relish opportunities to work outside his comfort zone.
Michael completed his course and afterwards was offered an Outdoor Activity Leader apprenticeship with Encompass Training. Before starting his apprenticeship, Michael returned to the Learning Curve as a volunteer, completing further training specifically related to working with young people.
Michael relocated to Devon and is now leading activities and making a positive difference to the lives of other young people. He has recently completed his Mountain Leader Training and Level 1 Paddlesport Coach qualification, and is working towards his Single Pitch (Climbing) award.
His nominator Gemma said, “It’s amazing to see just how much he has developed, I am beyond proud of what he has achieved.”
“I know it sounds cheesy but the Prince’s Trust Team programme has quite literally changed my life – I have found employment and I am happy again,” said Michael.
