Gigi delivers Functional Skills English classes at Wood Green Library, part of Haringey Council Adult Learning Service. Many of her students had a poor experience of school, but Gigi’s courses help them find a sense of purpose and ultimately find work.
Gigi’s learners have limited English skills, low confidence, often having no qualifications and working in low-paid employment. Her communication skills and positive attitude makes learners feel special and important and as a result feel nurtured and grow in self-belief.
Gigi analyses the performance of her learners to understand the difficulties some have. She uses feedback from course evaluations and learner voice activity to shape a series of new development learning activities that bridge gaps and enable progression.
The workshops focus on key aspects of English that the learners find the most challenging. These workshops are active, fun and collaborative and have demonstrably raised attainment, retention and confidence.
Gigi’s learners go onto further study, become active in their communities, develop their personal and social skills, gain employment or secure career progression.
Simon Beer, Head of Service at Haringey Council Adult Learning Service said, “Gigi’s strength is that she goes out of her way to understand the barriers that learners face to stay and complete the courses. She is an inspiration and great role model to staff and students alike!”
Gigi said “I come to the classroom to make a difference. I teach because I won’t give up on my learners, on their futures.”
