A Message from Buckingham Palace

As Patron of Learning and Work Institute, I congratulate all the learners, employers, providers and tutors nominated for this year’s awards.

Their inspirational stories show how lifelong learning contributes to our lives, our society and the economy in so many powerful ways. They show the breadth of reasons why people learn: to support children’s development, to contribute to the community, to get that first job, or a promotion, and to make friends and meet people. The variety of type, setting and motivation as well as the breadth of benefits highlight why lifelong learning is so important.

As well as the awards, this year’s Festival of Learning has involved thousands of events across the country where people could try learning, often for the first time in many years. Providing these opportunities to ‘have a go’ is critical if we are to persuade more people to get the lifelong learning habit. The Festival of Learning and Adult Learners’ Week campaign recently celebrated its 25th year anniversary, and I had the opportunity to meet past winners, hear their inspiring stories and the impact that learning continues to have on their lives and that of their families, communities and employers. I look forward to the next 25 years of celebrating the very best in adult learning.
