What you can gain from a Have a Go Month taster course

Always the inquisitive, her writing spans across a number of areas such as sustainability, fashion, lifestyle and now education. Her belief that you never stop learning and passionate nature has taken her to New York City as part of her degree and across the airwaves on national radio talking about the issues that matter to her.

If you haven’t heard, June is ‘Have a Go’ month. The idea is to encourage people to try something new and remain open to the learning process.

We’ve been working closely with the Festival of Learning to spread the word and right now, colleges and training providers across England are running taster courses – from photoshop to knitting.

Whilst it’s easy to stick to interests and subjects you’re good at, I decided to challenge myself and try something out of my comfort zone. Here’s how it all went.

Initial impression

After finding the public speaking course through the events calendar, I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of people enrolled on this class. There was a mixture from different professions and with different aims. Some had upcoming presentations they were nervous about, whilst others had longer term goals that involved public speaking and so shedding any confidence issues would be necessary.

Our tutor was super friendly and brought with her years of experience in developing people’s soft skills. As this was only a two-hour taster course, we focused on the following areas:

  • What makes an effective public speaker
  • Pitch and Tone
  • Overcoming nerves

Final thoughts

Towards the end of the session we practiced what we had learnt in front of the class. As nerve-wrecking as it was, it was the perfect opportunity to get direct feedback from the rest of the class and the tutor herself. Sometimes we don’t realise areas for improvement because we’re so focused on a polished delivery. For me, I stayed glued to one spot and didn’t walk around too much. This was quite an interesting observation because not once did my stance cross my mind.

You can learn a lot in two hour, which is why Have a Go Month is a great way to introduce new subjects and interests. If you find that you could benefit from a full course, then simply enquire with the learning institution you attend.
